Bar Soaps Deserve a Comeback

.......They're Not Just for Your Hands!

In a world of pump bottles, foaming cleansers, and 10-step skincare routines, the humble bar soap has been unfairly sidelined. But times are changing—and bar soap is making a well-deserved comeback. Not just for your hands, but for your whole body (and even your face). Here's why it's time to give the bar a second look.

1. It's Better for the Planet

Let’s start with the obvious: bar soap is a zero-waste hero. Unlike plastic pump bottles that often end up in landfills or oceans, bar soaps usually come with minimal or compostable packaging. Our soaps, for example, are sold wrapped in paper labels—no plastic, no fuss.

Plus, bar soap has a lower carbon footprint during transport because it’s more concentrated and lighter than liquid soap (which is mostly water). In short: it’s cleaner for your skin and the planet.

2. It’s Just as Hygienic—Really

There’s a long-standing myth that bar soaps harbor germs. Not true. Scientific studies have shown that bacteria don’t transfer from one person to another via a shared bar of soap. As long as you let your soap dry between uses (on a well-draining dish), it stays clean and ready to go.

3. Is Bar Soap as Good as Hand Sanitizer for Hand Washing?

Yes—when used properly, bar soap is just as effective as alcohol-based hand sanitizers for removing germs from your hands. The key difference lies in how they work:

  • Bar soap and water physically remove dirt, oils, and microbes from the skin, washing them down the drain.
  • Hand sanitizers kill many (but not all) germs on contact, but they don’t remove grime or chemicals, and they’re less effective if hands are visibly dirty or greasy.

According to the CDC, washing with soap and water for 20 seconds is preferred whenever possible—especially after using the bathroom, before eating, and when hands are visibly soiled.

4. You Actually Get More for Your Money

Liquid soaps and body washes are often diluted with water and require more packaging. A well-made bar soap lasts longer because you're using only what you need with each use. No waste, no over-pumping, no slippery mess.

At Simply Soap, our bars are crafted to be long-lasting and dense—no cheap fillers, detergents, or synthetic foaming agents.

5. Bar Soap Can Be Specialized and Luxurious

Today’s bar soaps aren’t the harsh, drying bricks of your childhood. The best ones—like ours—are handcrafted with nourishing oils, butters, and gentle ingredients that cleanse without stripping your skin.

We offer soaps with goat milk, coconut milk, oatmeal, salt, shea butter and cocoa butter. Whether you need extra moisturization, gentle exfoliation, a scent that lifts your mood, or no scent at all,  there’s a bar for that.

6. One Bar, Many Uses

Bar soap isn’t just for hands. It’s for body, face, and even shaving if the formula is right. Our salt bars, for instance, make fantastic body exfoliators, while making the skin extraordinarily soft.  Oatmeal bars work beautifully for dry winter skin. Shaving soap provides thick lather that make shaving, even sensitive areas, a breeze.

Traveling? Solid bars of soap can replace liquid body wash, face cleansers, and even shaving cream cans. That’s not just minimalist—it’s genius.

7. It Feels More Grounded and Intentional

Washing with bar soap is a small ritual. You hold it in your hands. You feel the texture. You breathe in the scent. It slows you down just a little—which, in a world of multitasking and screens, is a welcome pause.
